BUSH GOTHIC – Rebellious Australian Tradition
October 21 @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm$20
Rattled by the bones of convicts and steeped in campfire smoke, Bush Gothic perform darker, stranger Australian folk. A daring counter-culture folk band, their latest release ‘The Natural Selection Australian Songbook’ was chosen as a runner up for fRoots 2016 Album of the Year, BBC Magazines Best World Music Albums of 2016 with concerts in Australian gaols, rural goldfields and English Cathedrals being reviewed as ‘outstanding’ and ‘mesmerising…utterly riveting’. Bush Gothic assert their rebellious intentions by lovingly re-arranging traditional Australian folk music until the unfashionable is transformed into daring beauty.
The Guardian described fiddle-singer and band leader Jenny M. Thomas as an ‘Edgy rising folk star’ and together with double bassist Dan Witton and drummer Chris Lewis their tours of the UK and have earned them 5 star reviews, sold out London concerts and performances at the most prestigious of arts festivals.
All three members of the band have toured the world with a long list of internationally acclaimed music and theatre ensembles including Circus Oz , Sydney Symphony Orchestra and The Australian Opera but this is the first time they bring Bush Gothic to New Zealand.
‘Rescues Australian folk from the world of beards and blue jeans.’ The Age

‘A knowing postmodern aesthetic with arrangements that variously soothe, stir and surprise. Bush Gothic dive deep into the Australian national psyche and give its chain a yank’ – Songlines
