Woven: The Exhibition

February 10, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - February 21, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

The Harakeke Project

Throughout 2018 Depot Artspace will be organising a series of showcases to celebrate the work of ArtsLab artists and creatives past and present, highlighting the significance of a programme which promotes, supports and strengthens the creative sector.

This series will be part of The Harakeke Project. Harakeke, or flax, is our indigenous, omnipresent and most versatile plant species and symbolises both the source and strength of an initiative when its elements are woven together.

“Weaving is more than just a product of manual skills. From the simple rourou food basket to the prestigious kahu kiwi [kiwi feather cloak], weaving is endowed with the very essence of the spiritual values; the artist is a vehicle through whom the gods create”.

– Erenora Puketapu-Hetet 1989

The Harakeke Project weaves together the creative disciplines and those who practise them to form a strong and sustainable creative environment.

Woven: The Exhibition

Woven: The Exhibition is the first ArtsLab initiative to feature as part of the Harakeke Project. It showcases the work of ArtsLab creatives both past and present, as exhibitors, performers and as part of the promotional team. Together they represent the diverse disciplines and their value to Aotearoa, our turangawaewae, our identity and the economy. In Woven: The Exhibition, ArtsLab also celebrates its part in providing the practical support and guidance to its programme participants that strengthens a sustainable career path.

Woven: The Exhibition officially opens with a special event on Saturday 10 February 2018, 5:00pm – 7:00pm featuring performances and live music.
