Devonport was the childhood home of iconic Kiwi potter Barry Brickell. In fact he was much more than a potter – apart from being ‘a bloody good bloke’, Barry was an avid painter, kiln-maker, engineer, railway enthusiast, conservationist and writer. Sadly Barry passed away in 2016 but he leaves behind so much to our cultural heritage.
In his last few years of life Barry returned to Devonport in the summer months, writing at the Michael King Writers’ Centre.
Some may remember Depot Artspace paying a wonderful homage to Barry in July 2014 with what was his last exhibition whilst he was still alive.
